The Episcopal Church of St. Peter by-the-Lake was formed in 1973 by six families. The Rev. Gary Garnett, Vicar of St. Andrews in Mt. Holly, NC, directed the services. In the beginning, worship services were held in home, a marina, Wesport Country Club, and Mom & Pop's Restaurant.
In 1974, St. Peter's was recognized as a mission in the Diocese of Western North Carolina. The Rev. Dennis Fotinos was appointed vicar and was shared with St. Andrews of Mt. Holly.
Shortly thereafter, St. Peter's obtained a grant from the Diocese and purchased land on Fairfield Forest Road in Denver, NC. On January 6, 1979, the parish hall was dedicated and worship services were held in the new building.
The Rev. Dennis Fotinos became the first full-time vicar in June 1982 and continued in that capacity until 1984 when the Rev. William Todd was called to be the vicar. The following year, the church became a full parish.
In 1986, under the leadership of Rev. Todd, an aggressive building campaign was begun. Our present sanctuary was completed and consecrated on November 24, 1987. Two adjacent lots for additional parking were acquired two years later.
The Rev. Dr. Claude Stewart became the rector and served as a pastoral minister for the congregation from January 1991 until November 1995. On August 1, 1996 the Rev. Ronald B. Taylor became rector. The church now continues to serve the community through Christian education, worship, outreach and fellowship.
